Moving to the Netherlands from Dubai

Add 3–5 days for UAE packing and export, and 1–2 days for Dutch Douane clearance and onward road freight. Air freight via Amsterdam Schiphol is available for urgent shipments. The Verhuisboedelvrijstelling is the Dutch implementation of EU Regulation 1186/2009, allowing qualifying individuals transferring their normal residence from outside the EU to the Netherlands to import used household goods free of BTW (21%) and customs duty. To qualify: you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, your goods must have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months, and goods must not be sold or transferred for 12 months after import. The Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) is the Dutch population register. Dutch law requires all new residents to register at their local gemeente within 5 days of establishing residence — one of the strictest deadlines in Europe. Your BRP registration provides your BSN (Burgerservicenummer — Dutch citizen service number), which is required for: Dutch Douane customs documentation, opening a Dutch bank account, registering with a GP (huisarts), obtaining a DigiD (digital identity for government services), and health insurance registration. A DigiD is the Dutch government’s digital identity system, required to access virtually all Dutch government services online — including the Belastingdienst tax portal, health insurance registration (zorgverzekering), and municipality services. You can apply for a DigiD at digid.nl once you have your BSN from BRP registration. The process takes 5–10 days by post. A hijsbalk is the external facade hook found on most Amsterdam canal houses, used to hoist furniture through windows when staircase access is impossible. Amsterdam’s canal houses were built in the 17th century with staircases typically 70–80 degrees in pitch and 50–60cm wide — most furniture cannot be carried up the stairs. For canal house deliveries, Fusion’s Dutch partner team assesses staircase dimensions at survey stage, arranges the hijsbalk hoisting equipment, coordinates with the VvE (owners’ association) on access windows, and books canal-side parking. This is arranged in advance — not improvised on delivery day.

Yes. The Netherlands is an EU member state and does not require quarantine for pets meeting EU import requirements. Dogs and cats from the UAE need: ISO-standard microchip, valid anti-rabies vaccination, and an EU-format health certificate issued by an officially authorised UAE government veterinarian within 10 days of travel. The Netherlands and the EU prohibit: controlled drugs, certain firearms (Dutch verlof required for eligible categories), CITES-regulated items (ivory, certain skins), counterfeit goods, and hate material.
