Moving to Denmark from Dubai

Flytningsgods is the Danish term for the EU Regulation 1186/2009 removal goods exemption, administered by Toldstyrelsen (Danish Customs, part of SKAT). It allows qualifying individuals transferring their normal residence from outside the EU to Denmark to import used household goods free of Danish moms (25%) and customs duty. To qualify: you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, your goods must have been owned and in use for at least 6 months, and goods must not be sold or transferred for 12 months after import.

The CPR-nummer (Central Person Register number) is Denmark’s national personal identification number. It is required for: opening a Danish bank account, accessing the healthcare system (sundhedskort / læge), registering with SKAT (tax), using Borger.dk (government portal), activating MitID (digital identity), and most daily interactions in Denmark. New residents apply for a CPR-nummer at their local Borgerservice office after registering at their Danish address. The process typically takes a few days to 2 weeks. Without a CPR-nummer, you cannot activate MitID, which means you cannot access e-Boks, internet banking, or digital government services.

MitID is Denmark’s national digital identity system, replacing the older NemID. It is required to access: Borger.dk (all government services), SKAT (tax filing, tax card, tax refunds), e-Boks (all official digital correspondence including SKAT letters, pension statements, and health documents), Danish internet banking, and many private online services. MitID is activated after receiving your CPR-nummer. Without MitID, life in Denmark is significantly more difficult — virtually all official communications are now sent digitally via e-Boks rather than by post.

Andelsbolig (co-operative housing) buildings — which account for a significant proportion of Copenhagen’s housing stock — are managed by a bestyrelse (board) that sets rules on move-in windows, lift usage, and removal vehicle access. Many andelsbolig buildings restrict moves to weekdays during business hours, require advance notification to the bestyrelse, and limit the size of removal vehicles in the courtyard (gård). Yes. Denmark is an EU member state with no quarantine requirement for pets meeting EU import rules. Dogs and cats from the UAE need: ISO-standard microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU-format health certificate from an officially authorised UAE government veterinarian within 10 days of travel. Denmark and the EU prohibit: controlled drugs, certain firearms (Danish våbentilladelse required), CITES-regulated wildlife items, counterfeit goods, and hate material.
