The UK is one of the most popular destinations for people leaving the UAE, and many are returning home after years in the Gulf. Either way, a few things need sorting, in the right order.

Before you move

  1. Check your visa

Most people need a visa to live and work in the UK; British and Irish citizens do not. GOV.UK has a checker for the visa you need.

  2. Plan your shipment

Used household goods can often come in without duty or VAT under Transfer of Residence relief, claimed with HMRC’s ToR1 form.

  3. Prepare for banking

UK banks ask for proof of identity and address, so gather those documents early.

  4. Register with a GP

Once you have an address, register with a local GP surgery to access NHS care.

  5. Get a National Insurance number

You need one to work in the UK; GOV.UK explains how to apply if you do not have one.

Shipping your belongings

Sea to three UK ports

Most households ship by sea to Felixstowe, Southampton or Tilbury.

Air for urgent items

Air freight carries what you need sooner, at a higher cost for the volume.

Customs handled

Fusion prepares the UAE export paperwork and the UK customs entry, including the Transfer of Residence application, and delivers to your door.
