Australia draws people from the UAE for its lifestyle, its cities and its outdoor life. This guide covers the practical points to research before you go, and how moving your household from Dubai works.

Before you go

Visas

You need a visa to live and work in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs sets the visa streams — skilled, family, student and others — and publishes the current requirements.

Healthcare

Australia has a public system, Medicare, alongside private health insurance. Whether you can use Medicare depends on your visa, so check before you arrive.

Cost of living

Costs vary widely between cities, and housing varies most: Sydney is generally the most expensive. Budget from current figures rather than an old guide.

Climate

The seasons run opposite to the UAE’s: summer is December to February and winter June to August. The tropical north has a wet and a dry season.

Melbourne

A cultural and sporting capital with a strong food and arts scene.

Queensland’s capital, on the Brisbane River, with a subtropical climate.

Perth

Western Australia’s capital, on the Indian Ocean coast.

Shipping your household from Dubai

Sea freight to five ports

Sea freight from Jebel Ali serves Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Border Force clearance

Every household shipment clears Australian Border Force on arrival.

Biosecurity inspection

A mandatory DAFF inspection follows, so garden tools, outdoor furniture and anything that has touched soil or plants are identified at survey, cleaned and declared before packing.
