How to tell a reliable mover from a cheap quote
The moving market in the UAE ranges from international companies to a man with a pickup, and the quotes reflect that. The difficulty is that the cheapest number and the most expensive number often describe completely different jobs, and the quote rarely says so. A few checks separate them quickly.
Did anyone survey before quoting?
A price given over the phone is a guess at your volume. It will be revised upward when the crew arrives and sees the actual contents, and by then you have no leverage. A company willing to survey — in person or by video, at no cost — is a company willing to be held to its number.
Is the quote written, and does it say what it excludes?
A one-line price is not a quote. A written scope states what is packed, how it travels, what happens at the destination, and what is not included. Exclusions are the useful part: two quotes that differ sharply almost always differ because one of them leaves something out.
Who handles the destination?
On an international move, the company that carries your belongings into your new home is not the company you hired. Ask who they are, whether they are named in the quote, and how long the two firms have worked together. A vague answer here is the single strongest signal to keep looking.
What is the insurance basis?
Ask whether cover is on declared replacement value and whether an itemised list is required. “Fully insured” on its own means nothing — the basis of valuation is what determines whether a claim pays out.
Are the crew employed or subcontracted?
Directly employed crews are trained to one standard and carry the company’s reputation. Day labour hired for the job does not. It is a fair question to ask, and the answer is usually honest.
What packing properly actually looks like
Good packing is visible on the day. Cartons are double-walled and correctly sized — heavy items in small boxes, light bulky items in large ones. Fragile pieces are individually wrapped rather than layered into a box with paper thrown on top. Anything with an irregular shape or real value — art, mirrors, marble, antiques — travels in a crate built to its dimensions, not in a box that happens to fit. Electronics go in their own cartons with cabling labelled. Furniture is dismantled by someone who intends to reassemble it, with fixings bagged and tagged to the piece rather than tipped into a communal box.
Everything is inventoried as it is packed, and every carton is numbered. That inventory is what customs is shown at both ends and what a claim is settled against, so it is worth a few minutes of your attention while it is being made.

Questions worth asking before you sign
- What happens if my volume turns out higher than the survey estimated?
- What happens if my destination property is not ready on the delivery date?
- Who is my point of contact, and are they the same person for the whole move?
- How and when will I be told where my shipment is?
- What is your process when something is damaged, and who decides the outcome?
A company that answers these without hesitation is telling you something useful. So is one that does not.
