Dubai to Switzerland Removals
Moving to Switzerland from Dubai — International Removals, Swiss Customs (BAZG) & Door-to-Door Delivery
Fusion Relocations has been managing Dubai to Switzerland moves since 2010. We handle everything — from UAE export at Jebel Ali Port to BAZG (Bundesamt für Zoll und Grenzsicherheit) customs clearance under the Swiss Umzugsgut (removal goods) exemption, and door-to-door delivery to Geneva, Zurich, Basel, Zug, Lugano, or anywhere in Switzerland. A specialist route for finance, pharmaceutical, and international organisation professionals. FIDI FAIM-accredited, ISO 9001-certified, with professional delivery partners across all Swiss cantons.

What Moving from Dubai to Switzerland Involves
Switzerland is a premium destination on Fusion’s European network — driven primarily by finance professionals relocating to Geneva (private banking, UN agencies, and international organisations), Zurich (UBS, Credit Suisse successors, and the financial district), Zug (cryptocurrency and commodities trading companies), Basel (pharmaceutical — Roche, Novartis, and the life sciences cluster), and Lugano (Ticino’s Italian-speaking financial and lifestyle community).
Switzerland is not an EU member state. It is not part of the EU Customs Union. This is the single most important fact about moving to Switzerland from outside Europe: your goods do not benefit from the EU Regulation 1186/2009 removal goods framework that applies to most other European destination pages. Switzerland has its own distinct customs regime administered by BAZG (Bundesamt für Zoll und Grenzsicherheit — Federal Office for Customs and Border Security), operating under the Swiss Customs Act (Zollgesetz, ZG). The applicable Swiss customs relief is Umzugsgut — the Swiss term for removal goods exemption.
Switzerland also has its own value-added tax system (MWST / TVA / IVA — Mehrwertsteuer). The standard rate is 8.1% — lower than most EU member states — but correctly claiming the Umzugsgut exemption still eliminates this tax on qualifying household goods. Switzerland has four official languages (German, French, Italian, Romansh) and three distinct customs-language regions — documentation language requirements vary by canton.
Port routing: Switzerland is landlocked. Sea containers arriving from Jebel Ali enter Europe via Hamburg (for Zurich, Basel, and German-speaking Switzerland), Antwerp (alternative for German-speaking Switzerland), or Genoa / Marseille (for Geneva, Lugano, and French / Italian-speaking Switzerland), then proceed by road to the Swiss border for BAZG clearance.
What Fusion Manages on This Route
- Free pre-move survey and written quotation
- Professional packing using FIDI-standard materials
- UAE customs export clearance — full documentation
- Jebel Ali Port loading and ocean freight — European port routing based on Swiss delivery canton
- BAZG Umzugsgut declaration prepared by Fusion in the correct cantonal language
- Swiss border customs clearance — MWST exemption applied
- Door-to-door delivery to any Swiss canton
Switzerland Is NOT in the EU — Own Customs Regime
The most critical fact for Dubai to Switzerland moves. Switzerland is not an EU member and does not use the EU Regulation 1186/2009 framework. Swiss customs (BAZG) operates its own Umzugsgut system under the Swiss Customs Act. Fusion prepares BAZG-compliant documentation — not EU customs forms — for every Switzerland move.
20–26 Days — Landlocked Routing
Switzerland is landlocked. Containers from Jebel Ali arrive via Hamburg (for Zurich / Basel / German CH), Antwerp, or Genoa / Marseille (for Geneva / Lugano / French and Italian CH), then road freight to the Swiss border for BAZG clearance.
Geneva, Zurich, Zug, Basel & All 26 Cantons
Finance (Geneva, Zurich), crypto and commodities (Zug), pharma (Basel), Italian-speaking lifestyle (Lugano and Ticino), and all 26 Swiss cantons including rural and alpine delivery locations.
Four Languages — Correct Documentation by Canton
Swiss customs documentation language matches the cantonal language: German for Zurich, Zug, and Basel; French for Geneva, Vaud, and Valais; Italian for Lugano and Ticino. Fusion prepares BAZG documentation in the correct language for your canton.
Switzerland Delivery Coverage
We Deliver Across All 26 Swiss Cantons
Fusion delivers to every Swiss canton — from Geneva’s Champel and Cologny lakeside villas to Zurich’s Gold Coast (Zürisee) and Seefeld district, Zug’s lakeside residences, Basel’s St. Alban quarter, and Lugano’s Collina d’Oro. Our Swiss delivery partners are experienced with cantonal access requirements including alpine delivery routes, underground garage access for high-security residential buildings, and the specific logistics of Geneva’s diplomatic quarter.
Moving to an alpine location (Valais, Graubünden, or Graudens), a Zurich Gold Coast lakeside property, or Geneva’s Cologny? Contact our team — access logistics and cantonal clearance requirements are assessed at survey stage.
Shipping Options — Dubai to Switzerland
Landlocked Routing — European Port & Road to Swiss Border
Switzerland is landlocked. All sea containers route via a European port and then by road to the Swiss border for BAZG clearance. The European port selection depends on your Swiss delivery canton: Hamburg or Antwerp for German-speaking cantons (Zurich, Zug, Basel, Bern); Genoa or Marseille for French and Italian-speaking cantons (Geneva, Lugano, Lausanne). Fusion selects the optimal routing at survey stage.
LCL Groupage — Shared Container
Best for: Studio to 1-bed | Transit: 28–38 days | Cost: Most economical
You pay only for the cubic metres you use. BAZG Umzugsgut documentation is prepared individually for your consignment. Groupage adds consolidation time at the European hub port, making total transit longer than FCL. Best for moves under approximately 15 cubic metres or for clients with flexible arrival windows.
Get a Groupage Quote →FCL 20ft Container — Sole Use
Best for: 1–3 bed homes | Transit: 20–26 days | Cost: Mid-range
Your container is sealed in Dubai and opened only at your Swiss delivery address. The most popular option for Geneva banking, Zurich finance, and Zug corporate relocations. Sole-use containers move directly from the European hub port to the Swiss border — no consolidation delay. BAZG clearance is typically completed within 1–3 working days for well-documented shipments.
Get a Container Quote →Air Freight — Fast Track
Best for: Urgent & essential items | Transit: 3–5 days | Cost: Premium
Via Geneva International Airport (GVA) or Zurich Airport (ZRH). BAZG Umzugsgut documentation applies as with sea freight. Frequently used by senior executives and diplomatic staff who need essential items immediately while the main container is in transit.

Importing Household Goods to Switzerland — Not the EU Process
Switzerland is not in the EU and does not use the EU Regulation 1186/2009 removal goods framework. Swiss customs is administered by BAZG (Bundesamt für Zoll und Grenzsicherheit) under the Swiss Customs Act (Zollgesetz). The applicable relief is Umzugsgut — Switzerland’s own removal goods exemption. Fusion prepares BAZG-format documentation, not EU customs forms, for every Switzerland move. Using EU removal goods documentation for Switzerland is a common and costly error made by less experienced removal companies.
Umzugsgut — Swiss Removal Goods Exemption (BAZG)
The Swiss Umzugsgut exemption allows qualifying individuals transferring their normal place of residence to Switzerland to import used household goods free of Swiss customs duty and MWST (Mehrwertsteuer / TVA / IVA — Swiss VAT, currently 8.1%). The BAZG administers the exemption under Art. 9 of the Swiss Customs Tariff Act (Zolltarifgesetz).
Eligibility Requirements
- You must be transferring your normal place of residence to Switzerland
- You must have lived outside Switzerland for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before the move
- Goods must have been owned and used by you personally for at least 6 months before the move
- Goods must not be sold, lent, or hired out for 12 months after importation
- The Umzugsgut declaration must be submitted to BAZG at or before the time the goods cross the Swiss border
- The goods must enter Switzerland within 2 years of the date of transfer of residence
Required Documentation
- BAZG Umzugsgut declaration — form 18.44 (Zollanmeldung Umzugsgut) completed and signed
- Detailed inventory (Inventarliste) — itemised descriptions and estimated values, in German, French, or Italian depending on the border canton
- Proof of former residence outside Switzerland for 12+ months — UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, employer letter
- Proof of new Swiss address — Mietvertrag (rental contract) or purchase agreement
- Swiss residence permit confirmation — B permit (residence), C permit (settlement), or L permit (short-term) as applicable
- Passport copy
- Bill of Lading
Fusion prepares the BAZG form 18.44 and Inventarliste in the correct Swiss cantonal language on every Dubai to Switzerland move.
Swiss Residence Permits — B, C, and L Permits
Non-EU/EEA nationals (which includes the majority of UAE-based expatriates relocating to Switzerland) require a Swiss residence permit before they can take up residence or employment. The main permit categories:
- L permit (Kurzaufenthaltsbewilligung) — short-term residence, typically up to 12 months, for limited employment contracts
- B permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) — temporary residence permit, issued annually with renewal, for most employment-based relocations. This is the most common permit for UAE expatriates arriving to Geneva or Zurich for a finance or corporate role
- C permit (Niederlassungsbewilligung) — permanent settlement permit, available after 5–10 years of continuous residence depending on nationality
The residence permit is a required document for the BAZG Umzugsgut customs clearance. Fusion coordinates the permit status with your BAZG documentation at survey stage — and can advise on the minimum permit documentation required for clearance if your permit has not yet been issued when your goods are due to arrive.
Cantonal Registration — Einwohnerkontrolle / Contrôle des Habitants
All new residents must register with their local cantonal Einwohnerkontrolle (German-speaking cantons) or Contrôle des Habitants (French-speaking cantons) within 8–14 days of arriving in Switzerland, depending on the canton. In Geneva, registration is at the Office cantonal de la population et des migrations (OCPM); in Zurich, at the Stadthaus or local Kreisbüro. Registration is required before you can open a Swiss bank account, complete Swiss tax registration, or access most cantonal services. Fusion briefs every client on the registration process before they leave Dubai.
AHV / AVS — Swiss Social Insurance Number
The AHV number (Alters- und Hinterlassenenversicherung) — or AVS number (Assurance-vieillesse et survivants) in French — is Switzerland’s social insurance number. It is issued by the cantonal compensation office after registration and is required for: employment (pension contributions), healthcare registration, and most public services. Fusion briefs every client on the AHV / AVS registration process.
Geneva — International Organisations & Diplomatic Status
Geneva hosts over 40 international organisations including the United Nations, WHO, WTO, ICRC, and hundreds of NGOs and diplomatic missions. Staff of international organisations and diplomatic personnel may benefit from additional customs privileges under bilateral agreements. Fusion has experience managing moves for UN and IO staff relocating to Geneva — including the specific documentation required for customs clearance under diplomatic or IO status. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Vehicles to Switzerland
Importing a vehicle to Switzerland from the UAE requires: Swiss type approval (Typengenehmigung) from ASTRA (Bundesamt für Strassen), Swiss cantonal vehicle registration, and payment of any applicable customs duty and MWST (8.1%) if the vehicle does not qualify as part of the Umzugsgut exemption. Switzerland drives on the right — UAE left-hand-drive vehicles are compatible with Swiss road layout without conversion (note: most UAE vehicles exported are LHD). Switzerland also has strict vehicle emission standards — some older UAE-specification vehicles may require modifications. Fusion advises at survey stage — see our Automobile Relocation page.
Pets to Switzerland
Switzerland has close alignment with EU pet import rules due to bilateral agreements. Dogs and cats from the UAE need: ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU-format health certificate issued by an officially authorised UAE veterinarian within 10 days of travel. No quarantine required for pets meeting requirements. Some dog breeds are subject to cantonal breed-specific regulations. Fusion advises at survey stage — see our Pet Relocation page.
⚠ Prohibited & Restricted Items
- Controlled drugs and narcotics
- Certain firearms — Swiss cantonal weapons permit (Waffenerwerbsschein) required
- CITES-regulated items (ivory, certain skins)
- Counterfeit goods
- Certain food products from outside Switzerland
- Live plants and soil without phytosanitary certificate
- Alcohol above personal import limits

📋 Swiss Permits & Customs Timing
The Swiss B permit is required for BAZG clearance. Coordination matters:
- Apply for your B permit as early as possible — processing times vary by canton (Geneva and Zurich can take 4–8 weeks)
- Your goods can enter Switzerland within 2 years of your transfer of residence date
- If your permit is pending when goods arrive, BAZG may accept a permit application confirmation — Fusion advises on the minimum documentation acceptable at the border
- Fusion coordinates permit timing with BAZG documentation at survey stage

Your Move, Step by Step
Every Dubai to Switzerland move is managed end-to-end under a single contract — including BAZG documentation in the correct cantonal language and B permit timing coordination.
01 Free Pre-Move Survey & Canton Routing Assessment
A Fusion surveyor visits your Dubai home or conducts a video survey to assess your volume and advise on the optimal European port routing based on your Swiss destination canton. For Geneva IO and diplomatic staff, applicable customs privileges are assessed. Swiss B permit status and timing is discussed — BAZG clearance requires the permit to be issued or an application confirmation in hand.
02 BAZG Umzugsgut Documentation Prepared
Fusion prepares form 18.44 (Zollanmeldung Umzugsgut) and the Inventarliste in the correct language for your destination canton — German for Zurich and Zug, French for Geneva and Lausanne, Italian for Lugano. Your UAE residence documentation, Swiss address proof, and permit documentation are assembled into the BAZG evidence file.
03 Professional Packing
Our FIDI-trained crew pack your household using FIDI-standard double-wall cartons, tissue wrap, furniture blankets, and specialist crates. Every item is logged against the BAZG Inventarliste during packing. Fine arts, antiques, and wine collections receive specialist packaging and documentation.
04 UAE Export Clearance
UAE export declaration, packing list, commercial invoice, and Bill of Lading managed in full. Your container is sealed and transported to Jebel Ali Port. The Bill of Lading names the European hub port — Hamburg or Antwerp for German-speaking Switzerland, Genoa or Marseille for Geneva and Ticino.
05 Ocean Freight to European Hub Port
Your container departs Jebel Ali. Transit to the European hub port is 16–22 days. From the hub port, the container is trucked to the Swiss border (typically Basel EuroAirport customs zone for German-speaking Switzerland, or Geneva Customs for French Switzerland). Total transit from Dubai to Swiss delivery is 20–26 days for FCL.
06 BAZG Border Customs Clearance
Our Swiss partner agent presents the BAZG form 18.44 and Inventarliste at the Swiss border customs point. Swiss permit documentation is produced. BAZG clearance for well-documented Umzugsgut shipments typically completes in 1–3 working days. Any BAZG query is managed by our agent. For Geneva IO staff, applicable exemption documentation is submitted simultaneously.
07 Road Freight to Your Swiss Destination
From the Swiss border, your goods are transported by road to your cantonal delivery address. Zurich from Basel: approximately 1 hour. Geneva from the French border: approximately 30 minutes. Zug from Basel: approximately 1.5 hours. Lugano from the Italian border: approximately 30 minutes. For alpine locations, road access and seasonal restrictions are assessed at survey stage.
08 Door-to-Door Delivery
Delivered by our Swiss partner team. For Geneva Cologny lakeside villas, Zurich Gold Coast properties, and Zug residential buildings, access and parking are coordinated in advance. Unpacking, furniture placement, and debris removal on request. Wine cellars, fine art installation, and safe placement on request.

★★★★★
“We moved from Dubai to Geneva for a UN role. Fusion prepared all BAZG documentation in French and also managed the IO customs exemption process. Our container cleared the Swiss border in two days. The company we used for our previous move to Dubai used EU customs forms for Switzerland — it caused a three-week delay. Fusion got it right first time.”

★★★★★
“Relocating from Abu Dhabi to Zurich for a banking role at UBS. Fusion routed via Hamburg — the correct routing for Zurich. They coordinated our B permit documentation with the BAZG clearance and advised us that our permit application confirmation would be sufficient for clearance before the physical permit was issued. That timing advice was critical.”

★★★★★
“Moving from Dubai to Zug for a crypto company. Fusion prepared BAZG documentation in German, managed the European port routing via Basel, and delivered to our Zug lakeside property in 24 days total. Everything was handled under a single contract with a single point of contact. First class.”
