German Customs — Zollamt & EU Import Requirements
The Umzugsgut Exemption — Importing Household Goods to Germany Duty-Free
Germany is an EU member state. Household goods entering from the UAE must clear EU customs at the German Zollamt. Getting the Umzugsgut documentation right eliminates import VAT (19%) and duty on your entire shipment. Getting it wrong can result in a full reassessment at considerable cost.
Umzugsgut — The EU Removal Goods Exemption
The Umzugsgut exemption is established under EU Council Regulation 1186/2009 and administered in Germany by the Zollamt. It allows qualifying individuals transferring their normal residence from outside the EU to Germany to import used household effects and personal belongings free of customs duty and import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer, 19%).
Eligibility Requirements
- You must be transferring your normal place of residence to Germany from outside the EU
- You must have lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months prior to your move
- Goods must have been owned and used by you for at least 6 months before the move
- Goods must not be sold, lent, pledged, or hired out within 12 months of importation
- The application must be submitted to the Zollamt before or at the time of importation

Anmeldung — German Residence Registration
German law requires all residents to register their address with the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents’ registration office) within 14 days of moving in — this is the Anmeldung. The Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate) you receive is often required by the Zollamt as proof of your new German address. Vehicles — EU Type Approval Required
Vehicles imported into Germany must meet KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt) type approval requirements. Most UAE-specification vehicles do not hold EU type approval and require individual inspection and certification (Einzelabnahme) before German registration (Zulassung) is possible. 05 Ocean Freight to Hamburg
Your container departs Jebel Ali on the next available sailing to Hamburg — Europe’s second-largest container port — or Rotterdam for onward truck to Germany. Transit is 18–22 days. You receive the Bill of Lading reference and vessel tracking throughout.
06 German Zollamt Customs Clearance
Our German partner agent submits the Umzugsgut declaration to the Zollamt on arrival. With correctly prepared documentation, clearance is typically within 24–48 hours. Any Zollamt query is managed by our agent on your behalf.
07 Halteverbotszone Parking Arrangement
For city-centre deliveries — particularly Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt — our German partner team arranges a Halteverbotszone (temporary no-parking zone) with the local Ordnungsamt to ensure vehicle access at your delivery address. This is arranged in advance as a standard part of every urban German delivery.
08 Door-to-Door Delivery
