What Moving from Dubai to Denmark Involves

Denmark is a consistently popular destination for UAE-based expatriates relocating for pharmaceutical, shipping, technology, and clean energy roles — particularly to the Copenhagen business district, Aarhus’s growing tech sector, and the Odense robotics and manufacturing corridor. Denmark is also a common destination for returning Danish nationals who have spent years working in the Gulf.

Denmark is an EU member state. Household goods entering from the UAE clear Danish Customs (Toldstyrelsen, administered by SKAT — Skatteforvaltningen) under the EU flytningsgods exemption (EU Regulation 1186/2009). This exemption eliminates Danish moms (VAT, 25%) and customs duty on qualifying used household effects. At 25%, Danish moms is among the highest in the EU — making the correct application of this exemption particularly valuable.

Copenhagen’s historic inner city presents specific delivery logistics: narrow medieval streets (smugæ), strict parking restrictions in residential zones, and co-operative housing (andelsbolig) buildings with specific rules on move-in windows and lift access. Fusion’s Danish partner teams are experienced with Copenhagen city-centre deliveries and plan access requirements at survey stage.

18–22 Days Sea Transit

Jebel Ali to Aarhus (Denmark’s primary container port) or Copenhagen. Aarhus is typically the most efficient entry point for most Danish destinations. Air freight via Copenhagen Airport (CPH) available in 3–4 days.

Flytningsgods — Moms (25%) Exemption

The Danish term for the EU removal goods exemption. Eliminates Danish moms (25%) and customs duty on qualifying used household goods. Fusion prepares the Toldstyrelsen declaration and inventory in-house on every Dubai to Denmark move.

Shipping Options — Dubai to Denmark

Choose the Right Shipping Method for Your Move

Aarhus is Denmark’s primary container port and the most efficient entry point for most Danish destinations. Copenhagen port handles container traffic for the capital and Zealand. Both ports operate efficiently with Toldstyrelsen clearance typically completing in 2–4 working days when documentation is correctly prepared.

Danish Customs — Toldstyrelsen & Flytningsgods Exemption

Importing Household Goods to Denmark — Moms-Free Under the EU Exemption

Denmark is an EU member state. All household goods entering from the UAE clear through Toldstyrelsen (Danish Customs), administered by SKAT (Skatteforvaltningen). The flytningsgods exemption eliminates Danish moms (25%) and customs duty on qualifying used household effects. Danish moms at 25% is among the EU’s highest — making the correct application of this exemption particularly significant.

Flytningsgods — The Danish Removal Goods Exemption

Denmark implements EU Regulation 1186/2009 through Toldstyrelsen as the flytningsgods (moving goods) exemption. Qualifying individuals transferring their normal residence from outside the EU to Denmark may import used household goods free of Danish moms (25%) and customs duty.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must be transferring your normal place of residence from outside the EU to Denmark
  • You must have lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months
  • Goods must have been owned and used by you personally for at least 6 months before the move
  • Goods must not be sold, lent, or hired out for 12 months after importation
  • The Toldstyrelsen declaration must be submitted at or before the time of importation

Required Documentation

  • Toldstyrelsen flytningsgods declaration — completed and signed
  • Complete itemised inventory (fortegnelse) — descriptions and estimated values in Danish or English
  • Proof of former residence outside the EU for 12+ months — UAE residence visa, employer letter, utility bills
  • Proof of new Danish address — lejekontrakt (rental contract) or købekontrakt (purchase agreement)
  • Passport copy and UAE residency documentation
  • Bill of Lading

Fusion prepares the Toldstyrelsen flytningsgods declaration and the fortegnelse inventory in-house on every Dubai to Denmark move. No separate Danish translation service is required.

CPR-nummer — Danish Personal Identification Number

The Danish CPR-nummer (Det Centrale Personregister — Central Person Register number) is the key to Danish daily life. It is required for: opening a Danish bank account (bankkonto), accessing the Danish healthcare system (læge / sundhedskort), registering with the tax authority (SKAT), accessing digital government services via Borger.dk and MitID (Denmark’s digital identity), enrolling children in school (folkeskole), and signing most contracts. New residents apply for a CPR-nummer at their local Borgerservice (Citizens’ Service) after registering at their Danish address. The process is generally efficient — most new residents receive their CPR-nummer within a few days to 2 weeks. Fusion briefs every client on the CPR and MitID process before they leave Dubai.

MitID — Denmark’s Digital Identity

MitID is Denmark’s national digital identity solution — replacing the older NemID system. MitID is required to access Borger.dk (government portal), SKAT (tax), e-Boks (digital post), internet banking, and most Danish public and private online services. MitID is activated after receiving your CPR-nummer. Without MitID, access to Danish digital life is severely restricted. Fusion explains the CPR → MitID activation sequence to every client as part of the standard pre-departure briefing.

Returning Danish Nationals

Danish nationals who have been registered as resident abroad (udlandsregistreret) for more than 12 months may need to re-register with Folkeregisteret and reactivate their CPR-nummer and MitID credentials at Borgerservice on return. Until CPR re-registration is confirmed, access to e-Boks (all Danish official digital correspondence is sent via e-Boks — including SKAT letters), MitID, and digital banking may be blocked. Fusion advises returning Danish nationals on this sequence at survey stage.

Vehicles to Denmark

Denmark has one of the highest vehicle registration taxes in the world. The registreringsafgift (registration tax) is calculated as a percentage of the vehicle’s value — currently 85% on the portion of value up to approximately DKK 220,900, and 150% on the value above that threshold. On a mid-range vehicle worth DKK 300,000, the registreringsafgift alone can exceed DKK 250,000. Electric vehicles currently attract reduced registreringsafgift but this is subject to ongoing legislative change. Importing most vehicles to Denmark is rarely financially viable. Fusion advises honestly at survey stage — see our Automobile Relocation page.

Pets to Denmark

Denmark is an EU member state. Dogs and cats from the UAE need: ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU-format health certificate from an officially authorised UAE veterinarian within 10 days of travel. No quarantine required for pets meeting EU requirements. Some dog breeds are subject to Danish breed-specific legislation (racehundsforbuddet). Fusion advises at survey stage — see our Pet Relocation page.

⚠ Prohibited & Restricted Items

  • Controlled drugs and narcotics
  • Certain firearms — Danish våbentilladelse permit required
  • CITES-regulated items (ivory, certain skins)
  • Alcohol above personal import limits
  • Certain food products from outside the EU
  • Live plants and soil without phytosanitary certificate
  • Counterfeit goods and hate material

Full guidance: SKAT — Flytning til Danmark

🏠 Copenhagen City Delivery

Copenhagen’s inner city presents specific delivery challenges:

  • Smugæ (narrow lanes) — many inner-city streets require smaller delivery vehicles
  • Andelsbolig rules — co-operative housing buildings have specific move-in windows and may require advance notice to the bestyrelse (board)
  • Parking permits — removal vehicles require advance parking permits in many Copenhagen zones
  • Staircase access — many Copenhagen apartment buildings have no lift; pre-assessment of furniture dimensions is essential

Fusion’s Danish partner team assesses all of these at survey stage — not on delivery day.

How a Dubai to Denmark Move Works

Your Move, Step by Step

Every Dubai to Denmark move is managed end-to-end under a single contract — one coordinator, from your Dubai doorstep to your Danish address.

01 Free Pre-Move Survey

A Fusion surveyor visits your Dubai home or conducts a video survey to assess your volume, identify restricted items, and advise on the best shipping method and port routing. For Copenhagen inner-city deliveries, street access, andelsbolig rules, and staircase dimensions are discussed at this stage. For returning Danish nationals, CPR re-registration timing is also discussed.

02 Toldstyrelsen Documentation Prepared

Fusion prepares the flytningsgods declaration and the fortegnelse inventory. Your UAE residence documentation and new Danish address are assembled into the evidence file. We also brief you on the CPR-nummer application at Borgerservice and the MitID activation sequence — before you leave Dubai.

03 Professional Packing

Our FIDI-trained crew pack your household using FIDI-standard double-wall cartons, tissue wrap, furniture blankets, and specialist crates. Every item is logged against the Danish fortegnelse during packing.

04 UAE Export Clearance

UAE export declaration, packing list, commercial invoice, and Bill of Lading managed in full. Your container is sealed and transported to Jebel Ali Port, naming Aarhus or Copenhagen as the Danish arrival port based on your delivery destination.

05 Ocean Freight to Aarhus or Copenhagen

Your container departs Jebel Ali on the next available sailing. Aarhus is Denmark’s primary container port and is the most efficient entry point for most Danish destinations including Jutland and many Funen deliveries. Copenhagen port is used for capital-area and Zealand deliveries. Transit is 18–22 days.

06 Toldstyrelsen / SKAT Customs Clearance

Our Danish partner agent submits the flytningsgods declaration to Toldstyrelsen. Clearance typically takes 2–4 working days with correctly prepared documentation. Any Toldstyrelsen query is managed by our agent on your behalf.

07 Road Freight & Copenhagen Access Coordination

From Aarhus or Copenhagen port, your goods are transported by road. For Copenhagen inner-city deliveries, our Danish partner team arranges parking permits, confirms andelsbolig move-in windows with the bestyrelse, and assesses staircase access in advance. This is managed at least one week before the delivery date.

08 Door-to-Door Delivery

Delivered by our Danish partner team. Unpacking, furniture placement, and debris removal on request. Storage through our Danish partner network available if your property is not immediately ready.

★★★★★

“We moved from Dubai to Copenhagen for a pharmaceutical role. Fusion managed the flytningsgods declaration perfectly — our container cleared Toldstyrelsen in three days. The delivery to our Frederiksberg andelsbolig was coordinated with the bestyrelse in advance and the staircase was pre-assessed. Everything went without a single issue.”

Thomas & Sofie R.

Dubai to Copenhagen, 2024

★★★★★

“Returning to Aarhus after six years working in Abu Dhabi. Fusion advised me that my CPR-nummer had been deactivated during my absence and that I’d need to re-register at Borgerservice before I could use MitID or e-Boks. That was information I genuinely did not know, and it meant I arrived fully prepared.”

Mads L.

Abu Dhabi to Aarhus, 2023

★★★★★

“I asked Fusion about shipping my car to Denmark. They explained the registreringsafgift honestly — on my vehicle the tax would have been more than the car’s value. I sold in Dubai and bought locally in Denmark. That honest advice saved me a very expensive mistake.”

Ocean freight from Jebel Ali to Aarhus or Copenhagen takes 18–22 days. Add 3–5 days for UAE packing and export, and 2–4 working days for Toldstyrelsen customs clearance. Road delivery from Aarhus to Copenhagen is approximately 3 hours; Odense approximately 1.5 hours from Aarhus; Aalborg approximately 1.5 hours north of Aarhus. Island deliveries (Bornholm) require an additional ferry crossing. Air freight via Copenhagen Airport is 3–4 days.
Flytningsgods is the Danish term for the EU Regulation 1186/2009 removal goods exemption, administered by Toldstyrelsen (Danish Customs, part of SKAT). It allows qualifying individuals transferring their normal residence from outside the EU to Denmark to import used household goods free of Danish moms (25%) and customs duty. To qualify: you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, your goods must have been owned and in use for at least 6 months, and goods must not be sold or transferred for 12 months after import.
The CPR-nummer (Central Person Register number) is Denmark’s national personal identification number. It is required for: opening a Danish bank account, accessing the healthcare system (sundhedskort / læge), registering with SKAT (tax), using Borger.dk (government portal), activating MitID (digital identity), and most daily interactions in Denmark. New residents apply for a CPR-nummer at their local Borgerservice office after registering at their Danish address. The process typically takes a few days to 2 weeks. Without a CPR-nummer, you cannot activate MitID, which means you cannot access e-Boks, internet banking, or digital government services.
MitID is Denmark’s national digital identity system, replacing the older NemID. It is required to access: Borger.dk (all government services), SKAT (tax filing, tax card, tax refunds), e-Boks (all official digital correspondence including SKAT letters, pension statements, and health documents), Danish internet banking, and many private online services. MitID is activated after receiving your CPR-nummer. Without MitID, life in Denmark is significantly more difficult — virtually all official communications are now sent digitally via e-Boks rather than by post.
Almost certainly not for a conventional vehicle. Denmark’s registreringsafgift (vehicle registration tax) is one of the highest in the world. It is currently calculated at 85% of the vehicle’s assessed value up to approximately DKK 220,900, and 150% on the value above that. On a vehicle worth DKK 400,000 (approximately AED 220,000), the registreringsafgift alone can exceed DKK 300,000. Electric vehicles attract reduced registreringsafgift but the rules are subject to ongoing legislative change. Fusion explains the registreringsafgift calculation honestly at survey stage — the vast majority of clients selling their UAE vehicle before departure rather than shipping it.
Andelsbolig (co-operative housing) buildings — which account for a significant proportion of Copenhagen’s housing stock — are managed by a bestyrelse (board) that sets rules on move-in windows, lift usage, and removal vehicle access. Many andelsbolig buildings restrict moves to weekdays during business hours, require advance notification to the bestyrelse, and limit the size of removal vehicles in the courtyard (gård). Fusion’s Danish partner team contacts the bestyrelse in advance, arranges parking permits, and pre-assesses staircase access — all as a standard part of Copenhagen delivery.
Yes. Denmark is an EU member state with no quarantine requirement for pets meeting EU import rules. Dogs and cats from the UAE need: ISO-standard microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU-format health certificate from an officially authorised UAE government veterinarian within 10 days of travel. Some dog breeds are subject to Danish breed-specific legislation (racehundsforbuddet) — Fusion advises at survey stage. See our Pet Relocation page.
Denmark and the EU prohibit: controlled drugs, certain firearms (Danish våbentilladelse required), CITES-regulated wildlife items, counterfeit goods, and hate material. Alcohol imports are subject to EU personal allowance limits — significant quantities above these limits require advance import authorisation. Certain food products from outside the EU are restricted. Fusion screens every inventory against Toldstyrelsen guidelines before packing begins.
